Through its commitment to the environment, Mountain Equipment Co-op demonstrates sustainability throughout all aspects of its organization, including a commitment to green building practices and low carbon materials such as wood.
Built in 2014, the flagship head office located outside of Vancouver’s city centre demonstrated this commitment through its greenery on the roof, recycling of rain water for non-drinkable uses and the use of mass timber as the primary structural element. The natural beauty of the wood provides a warm and calming atmosphere for staff, while emulating the outdoors feel that is integral to the organization’s customers. As it is estimated that the carbon stored in the wood is equivalent to taking 618 cars off the road a year, the choice to use wood is an important step in building green.
