Exteriors applications 

British Columbia (B.C.) offers naturally durable species for outside uses including western red cedar, yellow cedar and Douglas-fir. These species offer varying degrees of resistance to insects and decay in their natural state, due to high levels of organic chemicals called extractives.  

Western red cedar, yellow-cedar and treated wood products are readily available for outdoor applications such as exterior trim, siding, roofing, decking and fencing. Wood used for trim, decks and fences can be installed in its natural state, or be stained, primed or painted.

Siding and decking applications

Wood siding and decking—such as verandas, porches and balconies—add warmth and character, along with inherent durability. B.C. offers a variety of woods and dimensions for decking; the most common species include western red cedar, Douglas-fir and pine. Wood is also used for poles that are durable, safe to use and easy to handle, store and install. These poles are used as pilings, mining-timbers, telephone and electric power line poles and telegraph poles.

Roofing applications

Wood roofing products include cedar shakes and shingles that are naturally resistant to water, sunlight and rot. Also, wood trim adds detail and refinement to wood exteriors, and helps to cover and protect structural joints.   

For improved durability and lifespan in harsh conditions, exterior applications of wood can be treated with a variety of preservatives and can be pressure-impregnated with fire-retardants for improved fire resistance.
