Nickels Cabinets began in 1966 when the Nickel family immigrated to Canada from Paraguay with just two suitcases and $250. Rooted in family values, their journey laid the foundation for a company built on hard work, honesty, and integrity. In 1979, Dieter Nickel proposed starting a cabinet business, and with support from his parents, Peter and Liese, Nickels Cabinets was born. Peter left his framing job to build cabinets, while Liese contributed with quiet leadership and financial insight, shaping the family-oriented culture that still defines the company.
Through the 1980s and 1990s, Nickels grew from a garage operation to a staff of over 40, transitioned to the frameless European cabinet style, and expanded into the U.S. market. The company purchased its first property on Graybar Road in 1990 and began production in 1993, offering a wider range of styles and materials that attracted a broader customer base.
In the 2000s, Nickels expanded its U.S. dealer network into California and Nevada, but the 2008 housing crash prompted a strategic pivot. The company adopted lean manufacturing and refocused on the local market, helping it weather economic challenges. The 2010s marked a resurgence, with renewed focus on Canada, re-entry into the U.S. in 2015, and a commitment to continuous improvement through Kaizen Institute training.
In 2019, Nickels celebrated its 40th anniversary with a rebrand, showroom renovation, and a dealer network celebration. Looking ahead, the company remains optimistic and grounded in its founding values, ready to serve customers across North America for decades to come.
