Domtar is a leading, privately held manufacturer of diversified forest products, with a work force of roughly 14,000 employees in more than 60 locations across North America. The company has an annual capacity of 6.3 million metric tons of pulp, paper, packaging and tissue annually, and has an annual production capacity of about 3 billion board feet of lumber and other wood products.
Domtar’s roots trace back to two historic companies: Price Brothers, founded in 1820 in Quebec for lumber exports, and Burt, Boulton Holding Company Ltd., established in 1848 in Britain for treated wood. Over the decades, both evolved through mergers and diversification—Price Brothers entered the paper business in 1912 and became Abitibi-Price, later merging into Resolute Forest Products, while Burt’s company became Dominion Tar and Chemical, eventually rebranding as Domtar. Domtar focused on pulp and paper, merging with Weyerhaeuser in 2007,while Resolute expanded into wood pellets and tissue. In 2021, both companies were acquired by Paper Excellence Group, which had also acquired Catalyst Paper in 2019. By 2024, the group unified under the Domtar name, becoming a leading force in the North American forest products sector. In late 2024, Domtar further expanded by acquiring Iconex Paper’s point-of-sale receipt business, becoming the top U.S. provider of thermal POS paper.

Domtar has mills in Port Alberni, Crofton, Howe Sound and Skookumchuck, B.C. with a distribution centre in Surrey, B.C.
