Commercial and industrial buildings are incorporating more wood into their construction. Along with the strength needed to last in heavy duty applications, wood has its own unique advantages.
Wood’s warmth makes it perfect for adding a cozy feeling to retail and office spaces, and the speed and efficiency that prefabrication offers is perfect for manufacturing buildings with a repeatable floorplan. Modern mass timber buildings arrive at the construction site in components prefabricated off-site in a climate-controlled environment to be easily installed when they get to their destination.
This learning chapter will identify benefits of building with wood in commercial and industrial buildings, demonstrated through articles and featured projects using wood as a structural and finishing material.
Participants will be able to:
- Summarize the benefits of using wood as a primary building material for the design and construction of commercial and industrial buildings.
- List and elaborate on examples of commercial and industrial buildings that use wood as a primary building material in construction or renovation.
- Identify and differentiate between the various types of engineered wood products, with an emphasis on mass timber.
