Wood can be insect-resistant

British Columbia wood species such as western red cedar and yellow-cedar are naturally resistant to termites. A number of hardwoods are as well. Douglas-fir is moderately resistant. But simple topical treatments, such as borates, can render nearly any wood species resistant to termites.

Wood handles moisture well

Wood has the inherent ability to both absorb and release moisture, and its moisture content always matches that of the ambient air, which results in natural regulation and stabilization of humidity. Wood-frame and wood clad structures can deliver excellent performance in even the wettest climates, such as China and Southeast Asia.

Wood construction moderates indoor humidity, reducing air conditioning and heating costs.

Wood provides flexibility

Wood products enable construction year-round in almost any climate, and workers of varying skill levels can quickly learn wood-construction techniques. Its light weight enables it to be sized and cut on site and wood buildings are easier to remodel, whether it requires moving a wall or adding an additional room.

One of the most unique characteristics of wood as a building product is its ease of adaptation to both interior and exterior applications. Colours and textures provide limitless design options, and engineered wood products further expand opportunities for use in commercial, institutional and industrial construction.

Wood can often be reused for its original purpose with little or no loss of value. As a result, reclaimed, recycled or salvaged wood is growing in popularity.
