Many tools are available to help building professionals and consumers make decisions about green building products and practices, including several comprehensive rating systems. The common goal of environmental rating systems, such as the Green Globes and LEED systems in North America and BREEAM in England, is to help building industry professionals evaluate products or design options and ultimately create a structure with a reduced environmental impact.
A choice in rating systems helps to strengthen green building, with processes that meet the diversity of building needs, sizes and budgets. The most effective systems offer a consistent, scientific basis for comparison, evaluate relevant technical aspects of sustainable design, and are not over-burdensome to implement and communicate. They avoid being prescriptive and instead reward performance and allow innovation.
